Binge Drinking
When men have more than 5 drinks in one sitting and women have more than 4 drinks
in one sitting, they are said to be Binge
Drinking. A person involved in such drink is called
a ‘Binge Drinker’. Statistics reveal that more than 70%
of students participate in Binge Drinking in a College
Campus.
And more than half, binge drink more than once a week. Academic stress, peer pressure, status quotient are quoted by most binge drinkers as reasons compelling them to drink. While most others just enjoy drinking.
Death due to Binge Drinking
Statistics show more than1300 college students in the age group of 18 to 24
die every year due to Binge
drinking. Drinking alcohol is the third leading
cause for death among students in the age group of 15-24.
It is estimated that an individual student spends around
$500 a year on alcohol.
Drop in Binge Drinking
Percentage of adults over 18 years of age who have consumed 5 and more drinks
in a single day at least once during the previous year
has substantially reduced. National centre for Health
Statistics has published that the proportion of Binge
Drinkers has reduced by 10% between 1997 and 2003. Binge
drinking among college students have been clearly reducing.
College students who have consumed more than 5 drinks
have reduced from 41.2% to 27.9% during 1980 to 2003.
Research conducted across colleges in United States
from 1980 has seen a decline both in terms of students
involved in Binge Drinking and students who consume
any alcohol. Proportion of US military personnel who
‘binge’ has declined significantly according to six
worldwide surveys of military personnel over the recent
15 year period. College ‘binge’ drinking has seen a
17 year low according to the Institute
of Social Research, University of Michigan.
