DWI: Drunk Driving
DWI or Diving While Intoxicated with alcohol or any other drugs is a serious problem in America and many other countries. People who indulge in drunk driving today are not just careless but also negligent and arrogant. They do not care about the hundreds of others with whom they share the roads. They not only put their lives at risk but also the lives of all these others. This is the reason why the government is dealing DWI issue with an iron hand.
The legal framework and penalties relating to DWI keeps changing constantly. The state makes the rules more harsh and rigid. The permissible amount of alcohol in your blood (known as the Blood Alcohol Content or BAC limit) is reduced every year. Still, only the number of arrests for drunken driving has increased. Also, now days, the ease of access of alcohol and drugs for youth has increased. In fact alcohol related accident’s is one of the leading causes for death among the teenagers in today’s world. To curb this issue, the government has introduced laws like :
- The 'use it and lose it 'law, that states that if any person below 21 years of age uses alcohol then he will immediately lose the driving license.
- The Zero tolerance law that states if any youth below 21 years of age has a BAC of above 0.00 %, then they will be charged for drunken driving.
The government is hoping that such strict rules will instill fear in the minds of youngsters and adults. This will persuade them not to mix drinking and driving. DWI is a serious criminal offense and it is the responsibility of every citizen to shun from the same.
