Do Family Feuds Also Lead to Drunk Driving?

Posted on Jul 28, 2011

There is a commonly perceived connection between drunk driving and family feuds between spouses, siblings, or parents. Sometimes they happen together. However, do family feuds lead to drunk driving? This is the focus of current research but experts warn not to jump to any conclusions. Whether drinking and driving has a cause-and-effect relationship with family feuds or the other way around is uncertain.

Do Family Feuds Also Lead to Drunk Driving

Perceived Link between Family Feuds and Drunk Driving

It is easy to conclude that these feuds cause drunk driving. For instance, many conclusions can be made from the common perception of events that seemed linked however, the connection is only superficial.

Researchers Use Care When Linking Relationship and Cause

For example, using statistics to find a connection between driver’s license, and drinking and driving can be misleading. Numbers can be used as strong evidence that there is a link between the two. Ninety percent of all people convicted of DUI had driver’s licenses. Does this mean having a driver’s licenses leads to drunk driving?

Correlation between Domestic Disputes and Drunk Drinking

Specialists point out that there is no investigated substantiation that links domestic disputes with drunk driving. Alcohol is easily accessible and vigorously promoted in the media. Drinking also continues to be a big part of people’s lives these days. Domestic disputes are also increasing due to the financial issues faced by a number of people. If someone drinks and drives after a family feud, the possibility exists that there is a correlation.

Tiny Percentage of Drunk Driving Cases Caused by Domestic Disputes

Research also confirms that the majority of drunk driving incidents are not caused by domestic disputes and they make up a tiny percentage when compared to other correlating incidents, for example, coming from a bar at 2am. Many DWI arrest come right after this. Yet, no researcher will go out on a limb and says that going to a bar leads to drunk driving. There are many variables that come between them.

Family Feuds Do Not Always Lead To Drunk Driving

Family feuds and drunk driving should not be associated every time. These are two separate social problems that sometime overlap but saying one leads to the other is a huge leap and it would take lots of research and study for anyone to link the two. There is no reason to believe that family feuds lead to dunk driving.

Cost of Teenage DUI & Emotional Factors

Posted on Jun 06, 2011

Teenage DUI is one of the most serious concerns in our society. This has led to over one quarter of all motor vehicle accidents in the country. Moreover, one of the leading causes of deaths of teenagers between 15 and 20 is due to motor vehicle accidents. Also according to estimations, one teenager is killed every hour in the United States due to teenage drunk driving.

Emotional Factors for Teenage DUI

To get a better understanding of teenage drunk driving, it is important to look at the emotional factors involved in it and the laws governing its consequences. Estimations indicate that over seventy percent of them start consuming alcohol before they turn 21 years. In 1995 over ten million drinkers were underage and it accounts to ten to twenty percent of all alcohol consumption in the country. The consequences of underage drinking and teenage DUI leads to a cost of about fifty three billion dollars in losses every year.

Main Cause of Teenage DUI

Teenage DUI is usually caused due to drunk driving during night time when they are travelling in groups. They want to show that they are better than the others and tend to show off in-front of their peers. Males are likely to indulge in it more than females, though the percentage of females is increasing. They put themselves at greater danger as they have the tendency of taking greater risks and exercise less caution. Moreover they do not wear their seatbelts as it not considered stylish to do so.

Teenage DUI – First Offense

If it is the first DUI of teenagers, then it is considered a serious offense and their parents or guardians need to be available for the hearings. They will be fined huge amount of money along with suspension of their license for a long duration. They will also have to attend community service for 20 to 40 hours which includes education about prevention of alcohol misuse. They also need to attend alcohol awareness programs. In case this is not done, their license will be suspended for another 6 months. If it is their only conviction in their records, then it will be removed from the police records after they reach 21 years.

Teenage DUI – Second Offense

If it is their second offense, then they will face similar charges as the first time DWI.However the cost involved is much higher as the consequences are even more severe. The fine amount is much more and the duration of the suspension of driving license is much longer. The community service hours will also increase to between 40 and 60 hours. They will also not get the levy of removing their name from the police or legal records as minor DWI offender. However, they still might receive deferred adjudication for a second offense. As compared to the first and second DWI offense, the third time offense is very strict and will include fine for about $2000 with Jail time of about 180 days.

Therefore, emotional factors as well as cost involved in teenage DUI are quite high and can affect them as well as their family members.
