Posted on Jun 24, 2011

Everybody enjoys a party with friends or family. It is even better to have them over to your home for a party, celebration or get-together. This can lead to drinking and eventually to drunk driving and it can be dangerous to operate a vehicle when drunk. It is an offense and can result in a DWI case. One of your guests can get behind the wheel of his motor vehicle after alcohol abuse and can cause accidents which can injure others

Preventing Drunk Driving after a Party

When having a party at home, you should be a responsible host and ensure that your guests drink responsibly and do not drive under the influence as it can be dangerous and lead to a DWI case. As the host of the party, you should take certain steps to make sure that they as well as others near them are safe.

Can you prevent Drunk Driving after a party?

While serving alcohol to your guests, you should make sure that it is consumed in moderation and they do not drive with a blood alcohol level (BAC) over the legal limit. There have been many DWI offenses with impaired driving resulting in many fatalities and injuries every year.

If you are a host, you should ensure the following:

  • Food is served along with alcohol to ensure its effective absorption
  • Serve more of non-alcoholic beverages as an alternative
  • Have a person to monitor alcohol consumption and the quantity being served to the guests
  • Request your guests to have a driver to drive them back home after a party if they have had large amount of alcohol
  • Give them an option of staying at your home
  • Request them to call a taxi or ask another guest to drive the drunken guest home
  • Retain the keys of the guest who insist on driving after being drunk as you might also be held liable for accidents and fatalities caused by the driver. DWI laws in some states place liability on the host who served alcohol along with the driver himself.

Therefore, it is important to be well-informed about the alcohol being consumed in your party so that you can ensure the safety of your guests, drivers on the road as well as yourself from injury and liability.

While some believe is complete prohibition of alcohol abuse, most of them follow the idea of reduced alcohol consumption.

Strategies followed by anti-alcohol industry to reduce alcohol consumption

One strategy employed by the anti-alcohol industry in reducing alcohol consumption is to make these beverages very expensive and inaccessible. The supports of this industry feel that:

  • The alcohol abuse itself is the cause for various problems related to drinking
  • Easier the availability of alcohol to public, more would be the number of people drinking
  • The quantity of alcohol consumption is related to the number of problems arising due to drinking. Other factors like speed of consumption, reasons for consumption are not directly responsible for it.
  • Anti-alcohol campaign should be focus predominantly on the issues related to heavy alcohol consumption and its ill-effects and should promote abstinence.

Owing to the support the anti-alcohol industry has received by all the supports, many measures have been taken to combat alcohol abuse. Some of the prominent measures are:

  • Increasing taxes
  • Restriction on the number of retail outlets for alcohol
  • Reducing the alcohol content in some drinks
  • Banning or censoring advertisements related to alcohol
  • Statutory warning messages on all advertisements on alcohol beverages
  • Presence of detailed labels warning its effects on all containers of alcohol beverages
  • Restrictions on sale timing of alcohol beverages and ensuring that they are sold only on few specified days and hours
  • Restriction on sale of alcohol to minors to avoid underage drinking
  • Decreasing the BAC legal limit for driving vehicles. This level varied for drivers of commercial vehicles and minors
  • Removing the tax deductibility on any alcohol beverage

The focus of the anti-alcohol industry is not just to establish legal prohibitions on alcohol abuse instead it is more on making it less acceptable by people so that they can completely avoid alcohol consumption. It is more cultural rather than legal.

Some of the prominent players in the anti-alcohol industry

  • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation focuses on building awareness about alcohol abuse and stigmatizes alcohol. This organization has spent money amounting to about a billion dollars in four years to spread the message across and develop and fund a network of anti-alcohol organizations, centers, activist leaders and opinion writers.
  • Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth (CAMY) has been established and funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It focuses on alcohol abuse among youth and reduces the rate of underage alcohol consumption.
