My daughter is fully aware of her limitations with fetal alcohol syndrome and we discuss it openly and often in the hope that she can advocate for herself in the future and prevent others from drinking. This process has made her very empathic to others and experiences they deal with through no fault of their own. Yesterday we were watching a program on National Geographic called "The Mermaid Girl, the last 6 months" and I was touched by how much she was moved by this girl's experience, and how much she would have liked to help her. Hopefully this can bring something positive out of a negative situation. By the way Chris, I wanted to add another thought.
