Moderate drinking during pregnancy generally does not have any adverse effects. Various studies and research reveal that there is no adverse effect on pregnancy as long as the pregnant mother does not consume more than one drink per day. Medical specialists are of the opinion that it is impossible to determine the time and amount of alcohol consumption that will not put the child under risk.
What is Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS)
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome or FAS is a health syndrome caused due to alcohol consumption by a pregnant woman and where the victim is the new born baby. This is completely preventable. Subjecting a child to FAS is no way less cruel than child abuse as the child is bound to suffer for life. Children affect with this syndrome normally have deformed facial features, short memories, smaller heads in proportion to their bodies, lack of coordination and abnormal limbs and joints.
The result is that these children normally tend to have inappropriate behavior, disruptive schooling, and severe physical and mental health related problems, addictive to drugs and alcohol, on the whole a horrible life time.
How Does Consuming Alcohol Affect Pregnant Women?
A number of studies and research have been conducted in order to get a clear picture about the alcohol and its impact on pregnant women. While browsing through the net for various articles pertaining to alcohol and pregnant woman I found an interesting article at ‘Alcohol Problems and Solutions’. The website offers you an in depth analysis into the details of Alcohol and its effects on individuals. It was indeed worth reading presenting some of it for your reading.
Women who tend to drink heavily during their pregnancies bore the risk of bringing forth children with smaller heads who had either mental or physical handicaps, when compared to those who drank occasionally or never according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Pregnancy and Alcohol – Is There Any Need?
Pregnant woman are warned of birth defects in their children where they tend to drink more than one alcoholic drink per day. Harvard’s Women Health Watch defines one drink as equal to consuming 12 ounces of beer, 1.5 ounces of spirit and five ounces of wine.
Consuming 2 drinks a couple of times in a week is said to cause no harm to the health of a pregnant woman, according to the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologist which is also consistent with the National Academy of Sciences.
Research has shown that Fetal Alcohol Syndrome occurs in children whose mother is an alcoholic; it also assures that there is no apparent risk found where the mother consumes not more than one drink every day.
Precaution to be taken by Pregnant Women to avoid Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
Given to learn that consuming alcohol causes birth defects the safest choice will be to restrain from drinking. But the question of practicality and awareness crops up in dealing with the issue of alcoholism. Those who are light or occasional drinkers can as well stop drinking learning the dangers caused by alcohol abuse on their little ones. The point here is about dealing with heavy drinkers, who also consume illegal drugs without knowing the adverse effect it can have on their child. In addition to addictiveness, ignorance can cause more damage. Leave alone the efforts taken to stop a pregnant woman from consuming alcohol; is she aware that heavy alcoholic consumption puts her child under the risk of FAS for life time?
Following the safety levels of drinking is sure to help, but nothing like not consuming it at all, where you rule out even the remote chance of occurrence of FAS and also given that the effects of moderate consumption of alcohol is yet to be found.
Do you find drinking pleasurable, given that your child will suffer for her life?

I am the Communications Director for the Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, a nonprofit that provides information, resources and support on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. I just wanted to correct your assumption that moderate drinking during pregnancy generally does not have any adverse effects. In 2005 the U.S. Surgeon General released an advisory stating, “We do know what, if any, amount of alcohol is safe”. He went on to say that there is no safe time, no safe kind and so safe amount of alcohol use during pregnancy. Everything a mother consumes passes through her placenta to her unborn child, and therefore has the potential to affect the fetus in several different ways. It is not just an issue for chemically dependent women. Even light to moderate exposure to alcohol can result in FASD. If people would like more information about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders they can visit our website at http://www.mofas.org. Thank you Emily Gunderson, Communications Director, MOFAS

@ Emily: I am so glad to see your comment, it is very insightful and will help everyone in need. Thanks for correcting me as well, I am a firm believer of Say No To Alcohol When Pregnant. Women who do this are not taking their pregnancy and the responsibility towards unborn child seriously. Thanks again, together we can bring some change to make this world a better place to live in!
Thank you for a great blog, I will be sure to bookmark your site and check later… Usually I don’t leave a comment but I wanted to let you know that I really liked your site
I loved reading this and I don’t really like to read
I have a Masters Degree in Medical Science, but not some
know-it-all; however, the Surgeon General , although a doctor, is a political appointee and citing him (her) does not constitute scientific proof. I have always told my female pts that to drink any alcohol during pregnancy is a bad idea.
However, Emily is succumbing to political correctness, not science. To be honest, women who abuse alcohol during pregnancy make me angry; by Emily’s logic, all they need to say is, “I only had a glass of wine at dinner.” We all know that’s bull.
My life has been changed forever once I became an adoptive parent of a child with fetal alcohol syndrome. Watching her struggle with her “different” facial features, impaired short-term memory loss, awkward social skills is tragic on a daily basis.
Please don’t drink during pregnancy, at all!
I use my skill as a movement therapist to create movement games and exercises to support her in every aspect of her life when info just evaporates from her mind.
@ Paul Stevenson: First of all thanks for dropping in and leaving your helpful comment. It’s always good to hear both side of the story and I really appreciate your comment here. As for drinking during pregnancy women I suppose drink for different reasons, some call it anxiety while other as habit. But whatever their reasons are it won’t do any good to themselves neither to the unborn child.
@ carolinetheparent: Caroline I really feel for you honestly it was distressing to learn about the child who is suffering by no fault of hers. I sincerely wish your efforts bring positive results to your child and other people’s lives too. I believe together we can fight to create awareness among women about fetal alcohol syndrome. Also thanks a lot for sharing such important issue concerning your life. We all at DWI Blog pray for your child’s success in every step of life.
Thank you Chris.
I wanted to share with you an example of one of the ways that I support her, to direct her energies to a positive physical outlet that will calm and focus her:

By the way Chris, I wanted to add another thought.
My daughter is fully aware of her limitations with fetal alcohol syndrome and we discuss it openly and often in the hope that she can advocate for herself in the future and prevent others from drinking. This process has made her very empathic to others and experiences they deal with through no fault of their own. Yesterday we were watching a program on National Geographic called “The Mermaid Girl, the last 6 months” and I was touched by how much she was moved by this girl’s experience, and how much she would have liked to help her.
Hopefully this can bring something positive out of a negative situation.
@ carolinetheparent: Ohh that so sweet of your little one, I mean she has such sensitive heart while being so young feeling someone pain at such tender age, that’s simply amazing.
Well I did check your site link it was so nice, I give full credit to you as well for recognizing her aptitude. Caroline we have networkedblog at Facebook: http://apps.facebook.com/blognetworks/blog/dwi_blog/ and I am sharing your site link with my network friends over there.
