A few days back there was an interesting article in MSN’s health website, ‘ninemsn’, under the category women’s health about a new trend among youngsters, especially women, where they caught in two extremes, complete control and lack of control. Such an extreme condition is referred to as ‘Drunkorexia’. It is a non medical term used to describe the pathetic state of young women who in the illusion to say fit and to drink as well, cut down drastically on their food intake and consume alcohol in its place, just to ensure, that they do not shoot out on their daily calorie intake and at the same enjoy the relaxation and intoxication caused by alcohol.

Drunkorexia

What is Drunkorexia?

Drunkorexia is a non-medical term gaining popularity among youngsters who want to loose weight and party without gaining extra weight. It is a weird attitude to stay fit, where actually you loose your health, under the pretext of staying slim. Drunkorexia is in short reducing or restricting the calorie intake by eating less in order to drink more. Youngster’s, especially women willingly starve all day long and break their fast with first sip of alcohol that takes them into a different world of losing one’s own self under intoxication and experience freedom at the cost of their health.

Side Effects of Drunkorexia – Self Destruction

The dangers caused by the this new attitude towards self destruction is as follows

  • Lack of balanced diet, where alcohol which has zero nutritional value is consumed in place of a healthy meal.
  • State of intoxication exposes the individual to both physical and sexual assault.
  • Irrational dependence on alcohol as the only source of relaxation, leads to addiction.
  • Signs of early aging
  • Deceiving ones own self leading to emotional disturbances

What has driven youngsters to Drunkorexia?

Constant exposure to unrealistic views about health and fitness is the critical reason behind this kind of a pathetic state of mind. They fail to understand the difference between staying slim and staying fit. A slim body alone is not an example of fitness. It is rather a vague combination of obsession to stay slim and satisfy ones addiction towards alcohol.

How to overcome Drunkorexia?

Drunkorexia is unhealthy state of mind and body. A negative mind and unrealistic inhibitions are the reasons behind this self devastating attitude. It is important to feel good and learn to live for ones own self than for others. It is good to practice a positive thinking everyday. Learn to have fun and add some humor to your life. Learn to share with others your concerns and ensure that you do not allow inhibitions rule your mind.
