DWI and Coming Holiday Season – What you should not do

Posted on Nov 25, 2009

A huge number of fatalities usually happen during the holiday season due to drunk driving. The holiday season is upon us and the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve is reported to be the most dangerous season due to alcohol related injuries and fatalities. If you plan to drink do not drive, designate a safe driver to take you home.

How much Alcohol is too much?

Drunk During Holidays

Because people react differently to the effects of alcohol consumption, it is very difficult to judge your own blood and alcohol concentration level. A person may not actually feel drunk but may be legally drunk. The likelihood of getting into a fatal car accident increases with every sip of alcohol you consume. Consuming any amount of alcohol will slow down your reaction time and good judgment. Research shows that impairment begins long before a person reaches the blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of .08. A person with a blood alcohol level of .08 to .10 is considered to be legally intoxicated. A driver with the blood alcohol concentrated (BAC) of 0.10 or greater is more likely to be involved in a fatal motor vehicle than a driver who has not consumed any alcohol.

How Consuming Alcohol can affect your Driving

There are serious risks involve if you decide to operate a vehicle while intoxicated. You can harm yourself and cause bodily injury or even death to others. Any amount of alcohol prior to operating a motor vehicle will increase your chances of a catastrophic situation. Listed below are a few reasons why you should avoid drinking and driving.

  • Slower reaction time: Driving requires that you can react quickly to emergency situations. You do not have to be drunk in-order for your reflexes to be impaired. A buzz is all it takes to impair your reaction time, thus causing you to overact and losing control of the wheel and causing a delay in reaction of the brake and gas pedal.
  • Alertness impaired: To drive safely you need to be alert and aware of your surroundings at all times. Alcohol consumption alters the normal function of the brain and body thus causing you to be less alert and aware, which can affect your driving and ability to make quick decisions and good judgment.
  • Drunk Driving Accidents
  • Blurred Vision: Alcohol consumption also affects your vision. Your vision may get blurred or doubled due to alcohol consumption making it hard to tell whether pedestrians, other vehicles or objects are close or far away.
  • Feeling of Overconfidence: People who drive after drinking may get an overwhelming feeling of confidence and not recognize that their driving is impaired. In most cases a driver who is overconfident when driving while intoxicated tends to drive more carelessly and recklessly, often times speeding, weaving from lane to lane or driving off the road and not noticing.

Drunk Driving Facts

If you get a DUI charge and/or conviction, your records will be altered. A DUI on your record can affect you life in many ways, even years after your conviction. Your DUI record is kept by Law enforcement agencies, the legal system and the department of motor vehicle (DMV). Access of your records can also be granted to several different parties, such as insurance companies, colleges, military and employers, causing devastating effects to your future.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle wrecks due to alcohol consumption are the leading cause of death in the United States. Law enforcement agencies across the nation are now issuing stiffer penalties to drunken driving violators in the hope that this will deter people from driving while intoxicated.

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reported, in 2003 approximately 4 percent of people who reported driving under the influence (DUI) in the past year had been arrested and booked for DUI in the past year.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 41,059 people died in traffic crashes in 2007 in the United States.

In 2004, 30 percent of all fatal crashes during the week were alcohol-related, compared to 51 percent on weekends and holidays.
18-20 year olds are responsible for more than 10 percent of drunk driving in the United States.

Have a Safe and Happy Holiday Season!

Alcohol Abuse and Domestic Violence

Posted on Nov 17, 2009

Use and abuse of alcohol have been a frequent topic for discussion in our forum. We have seen number resultant reactions of alcohol abuse and domestic violence is one of them

Alcohol Abuse – The Menace

Alcohol and its consumption as a topic is frequently being visited and more often than normal many regulations keep coming up whose main intent is to curb the consumption of alcohol. All these measures are to primarily stop the abuse of alcohol. Alcoholics often end up involving themselves in such activities that causes both physical and emotional torture and disturbance.

Activities such as driving while intoxicated, domestic violence, partner or spousal violence, health related complications are all the aftermath of alcohol abuse. It is more a menace than a problem. Inspite of number of regulations being laid out to curb the unwanted disturbances as a result of alcohol overdose, activities like driving under the influence of alcohol, partner or domestic violence seem keep happening.

Alcohol Abuse and Domestic Violence

Among the various abuses of alcohol, domestic violence is a predominantly discussed topic. While a section of people believe partner violence or spousal violence is a result of alcohol abuse, others see no correlation between the two. Seriously looking into the issue of domestic violence, in most of the occasions either of the partners is drunk. Which makes it clear that, the chances of violence are more when a person is drunk as he completely looses control over his mind and body.

What is meant by Domestic Violence? It is a state or a condition where the person is subject to both physical and emotional torture like hitting, shoving, beating, verbal abuse and such similar unethical acts causing pain and grief to the victim. Research also makes it clear that in only 25% of the domestic violence cases one of the couple is drunk and such an incident did take place due to alcohol abuse. It also stands to mean that 75% of alcohol abuse cases where not due to alcohol abuse.

Domestic violence also known as spousal violence, dating violence, the victim in all these cases is either the spouse or the dating partner. There are very few cases of alcohol abuse where the victims of domestic violence are parents or any other person. Given the facts domestic violence seems to be a problem more to do with attitude of the people than with the abuse of alcohol.

DWI Crash

As you all know the main aim of this website is to make you aware of the aftermath of drinking and driving. Driving laws of the state have been taking every effort to curtail any kind of drunken driving accident by imposing severe and strict punishments of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) offenders. Various safety levels of drinking and precaution have been insisted upon from time to time.

Whether the law talks about Field Sobriety Test or Zero Tolerance Test, there are certain groups of people who hardly care about any regulation that is being imposed. Despite repeated warnings and detailed explanations about the seriousness of the issues relating to drinking and driving public hardly seem to take it seriously. People tend to be careless and willingly invite trouble. Unfortunately, innocent travelers on road go to the extent of even loosing their lives or suffer from incurable health issues due to the stupid act of irresponsible few.

Well friends, we in this post have decided to take you through the journey of a drunken driver and the terrible aftermath faced by him and his co drivers on road. We strongly believe that atleast after looking at those gory real life pictures you will act more responsibly.

Terrifying Journey of a Drunken Driver

It was a long weekend and a group of friends decided to set out for a long trip in their car. All between the age group of 19 to 25, decided to have a blast with drinks. Who just doesn’t love it? So, were they totally excited about the fun.

‘Who can stop us from enjoying life’ saying so they began their journey on a late Wednesday evening. Fear factor just did not find place in their attitude, not even the safety aspect. Once their car set off on a long ride, the driver of the car began drinking. The effect of alcohol was taking its toll on the young alcoholics

Destination Unknown

They had a long way to drive before reaching their destination. It was an empty road and their excitement was at its height.

Young Alcoholics

After having driven for a while they decided to halt to take rest. Their spiritful mood was shown up with spirits in their hands. Little were they aware of the dangerous journey ahead of them. With irresponsible drinking habits not only are they putting their lives under risk but also the risk of others in the car and on the road.

An hour later they decided to drive the car and reach their destination before it was dawn, completely ignoring the fact that all of them were drunk and are just not in a position to even walk. I wonder how someone can be so careless about their own lives in the first place!

The group did manage driving for a while, how long can somebody withstand the effect of alcoholic drinks, soon the driver of the vehicle lost his control and the car went crashing near a bend against another car coming from opposite direction.

The car toppled after it went crashing against the car coming in the opposite direction. While the driver the car died on the spot others suffered severe injuries. It was a fateful day for Mr. & Mrs. Paul who where travelling in the opposite direction.

The couple had no memory of the actual wreck and according to them it all happening in a matter of seconds. It was later that they came to know that the accident was caused by a group of drunken youngsters who were on their way for an outing.

And for the group of friends, not just everyone suffered severe injuries they also lost one of their friend who was driving the vehicle.
