Everyone knows celebrities love to party. They love to be seen, they love the spotlight, and what is a party without mood altering substances? Alcohol just seems to go with the atmosphere when it comes to celebrity parties and which celebrity does not like to be seen behind the wheel of a fancy automobile? Put these ingredients together and you have celebrity DWI!

Celebrity DWI Arrest in the News

Celebrity DWI arrest are all over the news these days and the numbers seem to be growing. Many notable celebrities, political figures, and athletes are making the news by getting behind the wheel after drinking heavily. Some of the stories are just pathetic and make you giggle but it also makes you wander; what is leading to all these celebrity DWIs?

Cynics View of What Leads to Celebrity DWI

Some have a cynical view that these celebrities are just trying to get into the news, or they are trying to get extra publicity and save their sagging careers, but is this really the case?

Are Celebrities Aware of the Risks of Drunk Driving?

Could it be that some celebrities just do not care? They could care less about the deaths and injuries that drunk drivers cause. They are too caught up in their own lives and careers and not worried about the consequences of drunk driving on the peasants that share the roads with them. Are they even aware of the risks?

Celebrities are Insulated from the Consequences Of Drunk Driving

Many are not afraid of the potential penalties like regular folks are. Have you ever heard of an actor or actresses lose a role because they had a DUI of their record? How about a singer that did not get a contract because they plowed into the back of someone’s car and killed the poor person in the road? It just does not happen. They are insulated by their agents, lawyers, managers and handlers.

Celebrities Choosing to Drink and Drive

Many do choose to drink and drive because they have done it plenty of times before and never had a problem. They just do not feel the risk like Joe Blow from the factory that pounded down to many suds and finds himself in the holding tank and he cannot make bail or afford a big time lawyer to make it all go away. Celebrities may be willing to take the risk because they don’t consider drunk driving a threat to others!

The DWI case against Jets Wide receiver Braylon Edwards is headed for a pre-trial hearing and another possible delay as prosecutors and defense lawyers work towards a possible settlement. His next court appearance is scheduled for 7/22, barring any plea agreement. Edwards missed his last court appearance due to a flight delay.

Testimony may Cause Doubt in Drunk Driving Case

There have been reports that two other Jets players, who were in the vehicle when Edwards was stopped for an equipment violation, will testify that Edwards was not drunk when he was driving. However, authorities could counter with the results of breathalyzer test that record Edwards’ blood alcohol level at twice the legal limit.

Drunk Driving Case may Harm Free Agency

The player is a free agent this year and his legal issues will harm any offer that he may get from other teams. Reports say that New York is leaning towards resigning the 28-year-old wide receiver from the Cleveland Browns after he had an altercation with someone from Lebron James’ entourage in Ohio. Edwards was placed on probation to settle this offense and this is his first DWI charge. The Cleveland Browns drafted Edwards in the first round during 2005. He was the third player picked overall after playing for the Michigan Wolverines.

Will Edwards Stay in New York?

Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was quoted by a New Jersey newspaper saying that he wanted Edwards back for next season. However, Edwards sold his nearby digs in New Jersey, which is a sign that he may be leaving, and facing DWI charges in New York may sour him on staying in the area.

Edwards Recent Troubles

Braylon Edwards other problems with the law include:

October 2008 – driving 120 mph in a 65 mph zone

October 2009 – charged with misdemeanor assault

January 2010 – plead no contest to the charge of aggravated assault

Edwards was pulled over in September 2010 for an equipment violation in Manhattan at about 5:00 in the morning and the officer reported that he smelled alcohol in the vehicle when the wide receiver rolled down the window of his car. Two other Jets players were also in the car at the time of the stop.

Drunk Driving Charges in New York have Serious Consequences

A drunken driving conviction in New York is serious even for a first time offender. He could face up to a year in jail and an NFL imposed fine of $50,000 because of the league’s substance abuse policy.

Christina Aguilera was detained for public intoxication early this week and many media outlets are reporting that her new boyfriend was arrested for DWI. Law enforcement officers in Southern California booked Christina on a misdemeanor charge and detained her because she was so drunk that she could not take care of herself.

Christina Was Extremely Drunk

The 30 year old songstress, was “extremely intoxicated” while riding in a vehicle that was pulled over just after 2:30 am on an L.A. street a County sheriff spokesperson said. Matthew Rutler was driving the vehicle.

Star Had No Idea Where She Was Due To Drunkenness

Sheriff’s department reported that Christina Aguilera did not know where she was but she did cooperate with law enforcement officials. They also state that she was not belligerent.

The Traffic Stop and DWI Arrest

The incident began when sheriff deputies observed a Ford Mustang burning rubber and fishtailing onto a street. In Los Angeles, if tire burnout can be heard more than 100 feet away it is considered to be an exhibition of speed which gives law enforcement the reason to stop the vehicle.

After stopping, the Mustang, deputies could smell alcohol on the breath of the driver. This prompted them to perform a field sobriety test to determine the driver’s BAC (Blood Alcohol Content). The test revealed that the driver was over the legal limit. A driver in California is over the legal limit if the BAC is over 0.08%.

The Mustang was pulled over near Los Angeles’s famous Sunset Strip, which is home to many Hollywood nightclubs. Aguilera’s male companion was arrested on suspicion of DUI but later released on bail.

California DWI and Drunk in Public Statutes

Sheriff spokesperson said that the singer/songwriter appeared drunk and could not take care of herself during the traffic stop and after the driver was arrested, she had no one to take her home. She was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public so that the Sheriff’s Department could hold her until she could take care of herself. California DWI law permits law enforcement officers to detain drunken citizens for their own protection until they can take care of themselves without any intent of prosecuting them.
