Houston Rockets guard Rafer Alston charged with DWI

Posted on Feb 26, 2009

Rafer AlstonOctober 2008 brought Houston Rockets point guard Rafer Alston in the news but this time for all the wrong reason. Alston is this time charged with Driving While Intoxicated. Released on a $500 bond, Alston has been given a strict order by the court to stay away from drugs and alcohol otherwise his bail may be canceled. Good news for Alston is that his Canadian driving license is not suspended.

Past record:

The track record of Rafer Alston is quite bad to say the least. In 2007, he was charged with public intoxication and misdemeanor assault in Houston after a fight with a parking-lot attendant. Alston was also arrested in New York City after an alleged altercation in a pub. Because of lack of evidence in this case, charges were dropped. In the playing front, nine-year NBA veteran has performed quite well with an average of 13.1 points and 5.3 assists last season.

DWI Video:

I thought like sharing Rafer Alston’s arrest video with my blog visitors. Have a look at that, check his arguments with the the interrogation officer, Alston was handcuffed in the end.

Misdemeanor:

If convicted of DWI , Alston faces up to six months in jail and a fine of $2,000. Charge is a misdemeanor because it is the first DWI conviction for Alston. According to official sources, Alston was driving without headlights in the 3000 block of Washington early morning. Driving a 2008 Aston Martin, Alston is also accused of making an unlawful turn. Police officials are of the view that Alston had bloodshot eyes and his breath smelled of alcohol. Alston was unsteady on his feet and to balance himself he had to grab his car. Police official at duty has termed Alston as being combative and belligerent.

This incident once again shows the irresponsible attitudes of our celebrities. Rafer Alston is making millions a year playing for a high-profile NBA team and still doing such silly things. I hope, Alston now realize that not everyone gets such a wonderful life and opportunity that he has got. Instead of being charged for DWI, Alston should act in such a way that youngsters can treat him as a role model.

The Result:

Surprise verdict: He was found not guilty..!!

Kids Exposure to Alcohol Ads

partygoersIn today’s world kids are unwantedly exposed to a lot many issues which are not safe. The nature of the print and electronic media advertisement is another reason why it becomes difficult for us to stop children from watching them.

A flashy magazine ad or an attractive television ad attracts children’s attention and makes them focus on the intricacies of the ad. The very description which poses drinking to be a pleasure and an act that calls a drunkard to be gentleman are highly misleading.

We as elders are in a position to understand the falsity and lack of focus; children on the other hand take the lesson from ads. Whatever they come across through ads and living examples increases their curiosity to know them from their own personal experience.

Frequency of such ads leads to familiarity towards prohibited habits and disgusting behaviors. It is but a common fact that you are more inclined towards a negative aspect of an issue than a positive or the right side of it.

Alcohol Advertisements:

DWI Magazine AdEither step should be taken to control display of such ads in those channels which are kid centric or timing of the ads should be adjusted by preferring less frequent ads during those times when children watch their favorite shows on television.

Centre on Alcohol Marketing & Youth Statistics show that given a choice children view a revealing alcohol advertisements more than an advertisement which calls for action towards responsible drinking and its benefits.

The total amount spent by alcohol industry in marketing and advertising is around $5 billion over a period of 5 years out of which only $100 million is towards responsibility ads according to reports of Broadcasting & Cable a television industry trade magazine. There are cases where the there are alcohol advertisers who hardly spend any money on responsibility drinking.

MADD- Mothers Against Drunk Driving

Posted on Feb 05, 2009

MADD- Mothers Against Drunk DrivingWhich mother would like to have her child as a victim of drunk driving? None. This is the reason why the organization called MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) came into existence. Several mothers have had their toddlers, teens and kids fall prey to a drunken driver’s vehicle. The sorrow that grips the parents’ heart do not let loose. This is the main objective of MADD-to prevent drunk driving and create awareness about the same in society.

DUI (Driving under influence) and DWI (Driving while intoxicated) have become quite prevalent in the modern society. No longer is alcohol a taboo. Social drinking has become the norm. The word ‘party’ itself has come to imply drinks (except in case of children parties!)

It is also disheartening to see the youth indulge in such atrocities at such a young age itself. MADD aims to put a stop to this. All the campaigning and walks undertaken by this organization has made the government pass new rules and laws that have made the rules and penalties move harsher and stricter. The zero tolerance law (which states that the BAC limit should not exceed 0.00% in the case of youth and commercial drivers) is one example of such measures.

Organizations like MADD need all our support, help and guidance not only financially but also physically and emotionally. As responsible citizens, it is our duty to extend the same to them and wipe out DWI from the face of our country.

The sorrow that grips the parents’ heart do not let loose till they are no more.
